Highview Lookout, Cypress: Sunset and Blue Hour Over Vancouver
The twenty-five minutes after sunset, year-round. The viewpoint is tagged at a bearing of 165 degrees and downtown sits at about 152, so the city is dead-centre in the frame while the sun sets off to your right over the Strait - which means you get the sunset colour and the city lights in the same photograph without having to choose. In December that window falls around 4:30pm, which is why this is the easiest good photograph in Vancouver.
Porteau Cove After Dark: Astro and Aurora on Howe Sound
Astronomical twilight and true dark, obviously - but the frame that actually works here is the last of blue hour combined with the first stars, roughly 60 to 80 minutes after sunset in winter. The water is still holding light from the west down the sound while the sky above the ridgeline has gone dark enough for stars, and the pier reads as a silhouette rather than a black shape. Full dark is better for the Milky Way and worse for everything else, because you lose the foreground entirely.
